Cox, Allen Wayne
Allen Wayne Cox “Big Al”, 80 of Radford, VA, passed away peacefully to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, November 21, 2025. He was born on July 21, 1945, in Indian Valley, VA to the late Roy Allen Cox and Ettie Ivalene Huff Cox. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Kathey Dianne Cox Lawson; brother, Benny Thornton Cox; brothers-in-law, Arnold Lee Underwood, Lee Elbert Mcpeak, Marvin Edward Jarels, and Gene Allen Morrell; and niece Ashley Hannah Lawson Harmon.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving and devoted wife of 59 years, Brenda Duncan Cox; daughter, Lynn Cox Reed and her husband Gregory; three grandchildren, Darren Gregory Reed (Katelyn), Kendall Allen Reed (Samantha), and Greyson Wayne Reed; two great-grandchildren, Kian James and Kohen Adam Reed; brother, Jessie Cox (Regina); sisters, Mary Boothe (Joe), Irene McPeak and Betty Cox; sisters-in-law, Mozelle Duncan Morrell and Nadean Duncan Jarels, many beloved nieces, nephews and an army of extended family and friends.
After graduation, Allen proudly served in the Virginia Army National Guard until retirement in 1986. He also worked at the Lynchburg Foundry in Radford, retiring after 40 years of dedicated employment. He was most known for his jolly belly laughs that could fill a room and his guitar pickin’ that was by far his favorite hobby. His love of all things bluegrass and gospel led him and his friends to form a group called the Greasy Creek Ramblers, they played for several years at many firehouse events, nursing homes and family gatherings. But above all these things his greatest joy was his family. He was a very proud Papa to all of his boys.
The family would like to give special thanks to Fresenius Dialysis Center of Radford for the excellent love and care they have provided over the last eight years. You all have become family to us. We also want to thank the CCU unit at NRVMC who went above and beyond with the most loving and compassionate care during this difficult time.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 26, 2025 at Indian Valley Pentecostal Holiness Church with Pastor Rocky Huff officiating. Interment will follow at Big Sand Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the church from noon until 1:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made directly to Big Sand Cemetery c/o Jessie Cox, trustee, 3349 Indian Valley Rd NW Radford, VA 24141.
