Cook, Scott Anthony
Scott Anthony Cook, affectionately known to many as “Cookie,” age 56, of Christiansburg, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital in Richmond.
Above all, Scott was a devoted, wonderful husband and father. A proud 1988 graduate of Blacksburg High School, he dedicated his career to protecting and serving others through his work in security with the Virginia Department of Corrections, Carilion Security, and Mountain Lake Security. Scott was also a Master Mason with McDaniel Lodge No. 86 AF&AM in Christiansburg. During his time with Carilion, his natural warmth shone brightly—he was known for treating every patient he encountered with deep empathy, patience, and kindness. Scott had a generous spirit, never hesitating to go out of his way to lend a hand to anyone in need. Throughout his life, and especially during his health battles, he carried himself with immense strength, grace, and perseverance, truly living the belief that God gives His toughest battles to His strongest soldiers.
The family extends their deepest, heartfelt gratitude to Amanda Smith, whose selfless gift of a kidney 16 years ago freed Scott from dialysis and granted him the precious gift of living his life to the fullest.
Scott was preceded in death by his father, Haven Cook, Jr.
His memory and love will forever be cherished by his devoted wife of 32 years, Melissa (Ayers) Cook; his beloved son, Bailee Cook; his mother, Maxine Cook; his sister, Angie Linkous; his brother, Greg Cook and wife, Karen; and his brother-in-law, Donald Ayers and wife, Debi. He also leaves behind his niece, Amanda Adams and husband, Patrick; great-nephew and nieces, Clark, Aurora, and Claire; and his faithful dog, Oliver. While Scott made a friend wherever he went, he held a special bond with his lifelong friends Nelson Perfater and Chuck Early, his recent friend and coworker Mike VanHoosier, and his son’s close friend, Noah Riggins.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, September 13, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Horne Funeral Home in Christiansburg. A memorial service celebrating Scott’s life will begin at 4:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel, officiated by Pastor Jerry Hylton and Pastor Will Fillingham.
