Spicer, James Edgar
James “Jimmy” Edgar Spicer, 79 of Pearisburg, VA., went to be with the Lord on Saturday, October 24, 2026, at his home. Jimmy was born on July 30, 1947, in West Virginia and was the son of the late Henry William Spicer and Virginia Lane Wall Spicer. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by 2 sisters, Doris Burton and Frances Hudson, 1 brother, Maury Spicer and grandson, Parker Gochenour.
Jimmy was a 1965 graduate of Narrows High School and served in the U.S. Army. He was a proud member of the First Baptist Church in Narrows. He was a dedicated Law Enforcement officer, from 1972-2003 serving as a deputy for the Giles County Sheriffs office, an officer for the town of Narrows, and finishing out his career as a Virginia Tech Police Officer. After retirement, he spent 15 years working for Parking Services at Virginia Tech. Jimmy loved his community where he volunteered as a Little League Football Coach for the town of Narrows. He loved the outdoors, spending time hunting, fishing and golfing at Castle Rock.
He is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth Spicer Gochenour of Palmyra, his son, James W. Spicer of Floyd, 4 grandchildren, Lila and Carson Gochenour, Preston Spicer (Grace), Lexi Smith and 2 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Elmer Spicer and Sister Rebecca Spicer along with several nieces and nephews. His niece, Michelle Burton, held a special place in his heart. Her house was a frequent stop during his day where he would share stories. She also had a knack for getting his phone off Do Not Disturb and was always willing to take tomatoes off his hands.
Jimmy had friends throughout the county, but he especially enjoyed playing cards with Bill Eason and deeply valued the friendships he shared with fellow officers Morgan Millions and Mike Spicer. Jimmy continued to patrol Giles County daily, doing what he loved most—being out in the community. He could often be found riding the roads, handing out boxes of pencils to children and sharing tomatoes with friends and neighbors, always with a huge smile on his face. These simple acts of kindness and his genuine love for people made him a familiar and cherished presence throughout the county.
