Invasive Plant Removal in Heritage Park

Beginning Monday, November 2, the Town of Blacksburg will complete work in Heritage Park to remove invasive plant species such as autumn olive, privet, multiflora rose, and Asiatic bittersweet. Using heavy forest mulching machinery to clear a 15-acre area, this project will allow space for regrowth and the restoration of the natural habitat with thousands of native plants. This work will only target non-native and invasive plants. The most visible work will be completed on the Meadowbrook Drive side of the park, but work will also occur on the Glade Road side of the park.
This project is expected to take an estimated 2 – 3 weeks; the forest machinery equipment will be active between the hours of 9am – 5pm.
Citizens using the park in these areas may experience elevated noise levels, see machinery being operated and may observe heavy equipment parked in or near the lot on the Glade Road side of Heritage Park, during the work period.
The overall project is being completed in collaboration with the New River Conservancy, the Virginia Environmental Endowment, and the Virginia Department of Forestry. This is phase 2 of a two-phase project.
