Shires, Carrie Wilburn
Carrie Ellen Shires, born June 20, 1933, passed from this life into her Heavenly Father’s loving arms on Sunday, December 29, 2024, at the age of 91. Ellen was a loving and devoted wife, mother of four, grandmother to seven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
She grew up on Blankenship Mountain in Narrows, Virginia, and has been a long-time resident of Rich Creek, Virginia. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Rich Creek, VA, a loving neighbor, and friend to many. She began working at Celanese Inc. in Narrows, VA, in 1966 and retired in 1987. Ellen was one of the first female supervisors for Celanese.
Ellen was married on September 2, 1950, to Arnold McNeer Shires. They enjoyed camping, Virginia Tech football, and traveling with Sunshine Tours. In her later years, she enjoyed the swing in her yard, coffee and sweets, playing with her grand and great-grandchildren, and she was always one to serve others.
Ellen was the daughter of the late Floyd Jackson Wilburn and Mary Ellen Wilburn of Narrows, VA. She was preceded in death by her father (Floyd) and mother (Mary), husband (Arnold), son (Stevie), daughter (Debra), four brothers (Robie, Clovis, W. C., and Larry), and three sisters (Louise Trent, Rosa Lee Cox, and Barbara Wilburn).
Those left to cherish her memories are her devoted sons, Robert W. Shires (Melissa) of Elizabethton, TN, and Gregory S. Shires (Lisa) of Rich Creek, VA; one brother, Marshall Wilburn (Sharon) of Bland, VA; two brothers-in-law, Jimmy Shires of Bluewell, WV, and Buddy Shires (Winnona) of Newburgh, IN. She was lovingly referred to as MawMaw by seven grandchildren, Ashley, Derrick (Kara), Cody (Natasha), Katie (Kai), Alyssa (Josh), Lauren, and Natalie; eight great-grandchildren, Karsyn, Kaycee, Kaylee, Ryker, Khloe, Ellie, Evie, and Raelyn; one very special niece, Linda Blakely, and many other nieces, nephews and other loved family members.
Ellen’s wishes were to remain in her home with her family and they would like to thank her caregivers; Anita Rosner, Ashley Collida, and Britta Woodyard, and a special thanks to Good Samaritan Hospice for the wonderful team they sent to help in her care.
Visitation with family and friends will be held at Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home in Peterstown, WV, on Saturday, January 4, 2025, from 12:00PM until 2:00PM. Funeral services will follow at 2:00PM with Rev. Kevin Shirey officiating, and the burial will be held at Woodland Cemetery in Rich Creek following the service.
