Mann, Lewis David

Mann, Lewis David 2Lewis David Mann, 77, of Rocky Gap, Virginia, exchanged his earthly address for his heavenly home on January 16, 2026, following complications from pneumonia. One of five children born to Frank Lee Mann and Sadie Scarberry Mann, Lewis was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, John Mann and Keith Mann.

He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Raymond and Hilda Mann; his sister, Mescal Boothe; and numerous extended family members.

Lewis was a devoted father to his daughter, Alison Mann Hewitt, known to many family members and friends as Tracie, and a beloved father-in-law to Michael Hewitt. He was especially proud of his role as “Papa Lew” to his only grandson, Jackson Davis. He dedicated himself in both love and action to his family and cherished every opportunity to spend time with them, most recently celebrating Christmas together in Fernandina Beach, Florida.

Throughout his life, Lewis achieved much. As a student at Peterstown High School, he earned honors in track and lettered in football. He was also voted “Best Looking” by his senior class. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree from Bluefield State University and a Master of Mining Engineering degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech), ultimately achieving his professional goal of becoming a licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.).

Before retirement, Lewis enjoyed a varied and accomplished career in engineering and emergency management. He worked with FEMA, serving in New York following both the 1993 World Trade Center bombing and the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. He also responded to storms and disasters in numerous locations across the country.

Throughout his professional life, Lewis was proud of his association with several respected engineering firms, including Dewberry & Davis and Thompson & Litton. He was passionate about his work as an engineer and eventually fulfilled another professional goal by establishing his own consulting business, Mann Engineering. Whether working on large-scale projects, assisting communities recovering from disasters, or managing his own firm, Lewis approached every endeavor with dedication, expertise, and integrity.

His sense of humor, optimism, gentle and kind spirit were among the qualities most cherished by those who knew him.

Most important to Lewis was his faith. In 1967, he professed his faith in God and accepted salvation through the sacrificial gift of Jesus Christ. He was baptized as a public confirmation of that faith and trusted in God’s grace throughout his life, often affirming that salvation is a gift from God.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughter, Alison Mann Hewitt (Tracie); son-in-law, Michael Hewitt; grandson, Jackson Davis; brother and sister-in-law, Raymond and Hilda Mann; sister, Mescal Boothe; nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, many friends, former spouse Cherry, the mother of his daughter; neighbors past and present; and numerous coworkers whose lives he touched throughout the years.

A special acknowledgment is extended to Lewis’s longtime friend, Jim Ball, whom he loved and trusted with his life, even to the very end. Thank you, Jim.

Though Lewis’s earthly journey has ended, his faith has become sight, and his legacy of love, laughter, resilience, and devotion to family will continue in the hearts of all who knew him.
