Hokies Ice Hockey in January!
The Virginia Tech Men’s Club Ice Hockey team will be heading outdoors for the first time in program history on January 4, 2025, when they square off against North Carolina at Truist Field in Charlotte. The Hokies, who are in their 38th season, are amidst a historic season with a 15-1-1 record and are ranked seventh in the country.
Although not a D1 program, the team plays within the American Colligate Hockey Association (ACHA), or the club-level equivalent to the NCAA, where they compete in the M2 division with other teams like NC State, UNC, Virginia, and Liberty. Tech currently plays all of its home games at the Lancerlot Sports Complex on select weekends. The outdoor game in Charlotte is a chance for the Hokies to showcase their talent on the big screen as it will be broadcast on ESPN+.
The 2024-25 season as mentioned has been historic. Tech set a program record 13-game winning streak back in late September-early November. The team has the number one scorer in the nation with Gavin Peduzzi and another inside the top five with Kameron Khazai. Head Coach Joey Mullen picked up his 200th career win last month and is the ACCHL (league the Hokies play in) record holder in head coaching wins.
So why the Hokies? Why showcase this team playing this game in a season so historic? I have been a part of this team for now three seasons as the play-by-play and student operations director. During this time, the many individuals who I have talked to about the program, did not know it existed, little know there was an SPHL team who recently won a cup two years ago down the road. Hockey is growing rapidly in Southwest Virginia. This outdoor game means everything to the players, coaches, staff, and more in getting our name out to those who don’t know us.
To provide some other details about the game, the team will be practicing before the new year in Vinton in preparation. The game is on January 4, 2025, at 7 p.m. against the North Carolina Tar Heels on ESPN+. Tickets for the game (both general admission and student) are still on sale and can be accessed on our team’s website.
