Big Sky by Rebecca Harris

Rebecca Harris is a Radford resident, born and raised in Southwest Virginia. Her family were among the original settlers in Montgomery County in the 1700s. Rebecca is quoted as saying, “My roots run deep into the Appalachian Mountains and its history, which is the backdrop for my art expression.”  Her art takes many forms including photography, stained glass, watercolor, acrylic, and oil painting.

Rebecca’s paintings usually begin with a photograph or a good book, time in history, or people she meets. Creativity shows a way of catching a moment in time shared with others. Rebecca’s painting, Big Sky, was inspired on a trip taken to Montana years ago. The beauty of the state always stayed with her and as she blends the paint on the canvas, it gives her a deeper sense of that memory.

Sharon Taylor was born and raised in Radford. Since retiring as an operating room nurse, she has been able to put more time into painting. Sharon especially enjoys painting with watercolors but also works with acrylic and oils. She often focuses on landscapes but will paint “whatever catches her eye in the moment.” Sharon says, “God has given us so much beauty to enjoy and paint.”

Sharon has loved painting since early childhood. For several years, she taught an art class to children after school, and it was a pleasure to observe those young children beginning to love art as much as she does. Her painting, Mission Barn, is a collaboration between her son Brian who drew the image and Sharon who painted it. The barn stands in Marion near Project Crossroads and is a mission supporting southwest Virginia.

Glencoe Mansion’s hours of operation are Wednesday through Saturday from 10 AM to 4 PM and Sunday from 1 to 4 PM. There is no admission charge.
