Mary Ann Short, 88, passed away peacefully at home on June 27, 2026, in Blacksburg, Virginia. Born on August 10, 1937, in Montezuma, Ohio, Mary Ann lived a full and meaningful life marked by dedication to her family and a life-long passion for cooking and baking for those around her.
She was born to the late Herman and Rose (née Donovan) Peggs. She was preceded in death by her brothers Larry Peggs, Donald Peggs, Dale Peggs, and her sisters Martha Jean Werling, Kathy Chaney, Nancy Fowler, and Sharon Makley. Surviving siblings are Susie Peggs, Billy Peggs, and David Peggs. In addition to her parents and several siblings, she was also preceded in death by her husband, John Joseph Short; oldest son, Steven Short; and oldest grandchild, Marlene Short.
She is survived by five children: Mark Short, Angela Short, Theresa Cates, Gregory Short, and Robert Short. She is also survived by grandchildren Lisa Short, Paul Short, Nicholas Short, Renee Short, Devon Blankenbiller, Danielle Short, Rachel Lloyd, Andrew Riegel, Emily Jacobs, Lauren Short, Jack Short, Tyler Short, Alexander Short, and Ryan Short, as well as 16 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.
Mary Ann was a supreme chef who loved making delicious and elaborate meals for family and friends. Her holiday roasts, ham and bean soup, and classic chili were always a favorite at any family gathering, with her German chocolate cake or cherry pie being an extra-special treat. To eat Mary Ann’s food was to know and feel her love. She also enjoyed watching true-crime and detective shows, was an avid fan of ice-skating, and loved spending time with her grandchildren and family pets.
Graveside services to honor Mary Ann’s life will be held for friends and family at Fairview Cemetery in Shillington, Pennsylvania, at a later time. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Montgomery County Animal Care and Adoption Center, or the Animal Rescue League of Berks County.
