Notice from Claytor Hydroelectric Project

Notice from Claytor Hydroelectric Project 2As the remnants of Hurricane Isaias continue to bring heavy rainfall to our area, flows on the New River are expected to be impacted. Appalachian Power is monitoring inflows and will make operational adjustments as necessary which could impact downstream flows.

Now is the time for shoreline property owners to secure watercraft and floating docks. People who live and recreate downstream of Claytor Dam should be aware water levels could rise rapidly and fluctuate throughout the coming days.

We encourage you to visit our website for real-time water levels.

Please be aware that the National Water Prediction Service (of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Office of Water Prediction) has forecast inflows on the New River at Allisonia to increase above 20,000 cubic feet per second.

In order to maintain run-of-river operation at the Claytor Hydroelectric Project (Project), Appalachian Power Company (APCO) will be matching inflows to the Project, which means that downstream releases from Claytor Dam will correspondingly increase.

APCO will provide information and/or updates via social media, including its Project Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/claytorHydro/.

In addition, real-time downstream forecasts for select locations from Claytor Dam can be found at https://www.aep.com/recreation/hydro/#Roanoke.

Thank you and please be safe while recreating on the water.
