Murphy, Marcia Miller
Marcia Murphy passed away June 21, 2026. Marcia was born in Columbia Station, Ohio, December 18, 1948.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William (Bill) F. Murphy; her parents Russell and Viola Miller and her siblings. Surviving her are sons, Geoffrey Murphy (Christine), Benjamin Murphy (Angela), and her grandchildren Alivea and Kirin.
Marcia was a public-school teacher for more than 30 years. Following her retirement, she spent four years in South Africa as a member of the Peace Corps. Upon returning to Blacksburg, she remained active by volunteering with many organizations within the community.
She may be best known for her love of plants, gardening, and hiking. She would frequently be out hiking alone or with friends, several miles at a time, including the day before she departed. Her house would gradually fill up with plants that she would then give away to family and friends, so she had space for new ones. Her yard was a haven for native plants (and deer). When you visited her, a tour of the yard was often the first thing that happened, and upon your departure you may have been offered a plant or two.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at 10:00 am at Christ Episcopal Church in Blacksburg; 120 Church St. NE. Blacksburg VA, 24060.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Blacksburg Interfaith Food Pantry where she served as a volunteer, 206 3rd Ave, Radford, Va. 24141, (540) 633-5133;
