McNew, Lena Smith

McNew, Lena Smith 4Our precious Mom, Lena May (Smith) McNew of Shawsville, was called home to be with the Lord on Monday, October 10, 2022, surrounded by her family. Lena was born on January 12, 1944, to Mr. Robia Lee Smith and Gladys Eugene Smith of Floyd, VA.

She was a devoted and loving wife to our father, the late Osborne McNew, and celebrated 37 years of marriage before his passing in 2007. Together they raised three children and enjoyed sharing in the lives of many grandchildren, whom she held so dear to her heart. Mom always had a tenacious spirit and an incredible love for her family. She will forever be in our hearts and missed every day.

Lena was preceded in death by her husband, Frazier Osborne McNew, parents, Robia and Gladys Smith, siblings, Altrude Smith, Shirley Smith, Melvin Smith, all of Floyd, VA, Betty (Smith) St. Clair and Berta (Smith) St. Clair of Beckley, WVA and Roy Lee Smith of Elliston.

She is survived by three children; Frazier Lee McNew (Ashley), of Blacksburg, Gloria Ellen Blankenship (Andy) of Elliston, and her youngest, Mark Andrew McNew of Shawsville; her beloved grandchildren, Dillon Craighead (Lucy), Denise Craighead, Briana Craighead, Lauren Craighead, Jeremy Craighead, Justin Craighead, and Hayden McNew; step-grandchildren, Taylor Blankenship and Caleb Blankenship; great-grandchildren, Wyatt Basham, Weston Basham, Carson Martin, Brooke Cruz, and Eliana Craighead. Also surviving is her dear sister, Pauline Bond (Conrad) of Floyd, whom she loved with all her heart, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family and friends.

A special thank you to our brother, Mark McNew for devoting his life to our Momma and being her sole caregiver as she battled her illness. Mark cared for her each and every day, making sure that all of her needs were met and constantly advocating for her care to make her life as enjoyable and meaningful as possible during her courageous battle. He cared for Mom the way she always cared for all of us; with kindness, love and compassion. We love you, dear brother, and we thank you for loving our sweet Momma, from the bottom of our hearts.

Visitation will be held at Horne’s Funeral Home in Christiansburg, VA on Friday, October 14, 2022, at 1:00pm. Services will begin in the Horne’s chapel at 2:00pm, with a graveside service immediately following at the Smith Family Cemetery, located on Laurel Creek Rd. in Pilot, VA.
