Dowdy, Cathy Smith 8Cathy Smith Dowdy, 62 of Newport, VA, went to be with the Lord on Friday, August 25, 2023, at LewisGale Montgomery Hospital in Blacksburg. Cathy was born on November 24, 1960, in Roanoke and was a daughter of Patricia Ann McKinney and the late John Wallace Smith. Besides her father, she was preceded in death by her husband, David Allen Dowdy, 1 brother, Danny McKinney and 1 brother-in-law, Anthony Dowdy.

Cathy was a Giles High School graduate, Class of 1979. Not long after high school, she met the love of her life, David Allen Dowdy and were married until he passed away, March 13, 2021. She was employed as a machinist at Federal Mogel for many years. She then started her own business, Affordable Decals and Custom Graphics in Narrows and then in Pembroke, where she made many friends, making shirts and jerseys for the local sports in our area. She loved her animals, both domestic and wild. She especially adored her niece, nephews and great nieces and nephews.

Besides her mother, she is survived by 1 sister, Marie Smith Holmes (Allen) of Christiansburg, 4 nephews, Dean Davis (Angie) of Pearisburg, Joshua Davis (Amanda) of Pearisburg, Matthew Holmes of Christiansburg, Ethan Bussey, niece, Selena Holmes (Brandon) of Eggleston, Sydney Holmes, Andrew Dowdy, Phillip Dowdy, Garrett Dowdy, 15 great nieces and nephews, Skyler, Cameron, Brennen, Zoe, Emmalin, Adalee, Meredith, Dalton, Kayleigh, Declan, Jacob, Zandria, Colton, Aubree and Laciee and special friends, Glen and Lynn Skaggs, Missy and Jason McCroskey, Zane Bagwell, brothers-in-law, Greg Dowdy (Denise of Pembroke, Jay Dowdy (Carolyn) of Dugspur, as well as many others.

A Celebration of Life will be conducted Monday, August 28, 2023, at 11am at The Riverview Baptist Church in Ripplemead with Pastor Jay Smith, Pastor Shahn Wilburn officiating with burial following in the Atkins Cemetery in Newport. The family will receive friends at the church 1 hour before the service from 10 – 11am.
