Atwell, Jr., John Elmer
On May 21st, 2026, John Elmer Atwell, Jr. of Pembroke, VA, departed this world and joined hands with His Savior. Born in VA in 1950 to the late John Elmer Atwell Sr. and Cynthia Emaline Atwell. He was preceded in death by his older brother, Bernard Eugene Atwell and his beloved aunt who raised him, Billie Mae Tiller.
Survived by the love of his life, Sharon Atwell. His children, who he loved endlessly, John Atwell and wife Sarina of Ohio, Tony Atwell and wife Michelle of WV, Joe Atwell and wife Allison of SC, and Amy Pauley and Andrew Brooks, of VA.
Also survived by his grandchildren, who he loved and helped mold, Scooter, Brandon, Lane, Chance, Ethan, Carsyn (Landin), Isabell, Caleb, Caden, Camryn, and Liam. Seven great grandchildren that made his face light up with every picture, Troy, London, Ashton, Tucker, Madielyn, Sterling, and Junie. Two sisters, who he loved, Carol Watson of Michigan and Kathy Heller of Florida. Two very special cousins, who he felt were more like siblings, Annette Jenkins of Ohio and Larry Tiller of Fl. Many in-laws, nieces, and nephews, all who he loved. The man had lots of people to love, and he did so with his whole heart. He especially loved his wife, who cared for him faithfully and endlessly until he passed.
To know my dad was a privilege and honor. He worked hard for his family for many years even after he became ill. He was the definition of perseverance and determination. He was generous, kind, patient, quick witted, and to the point. He mentored not only me and my brothers, but so many others. He never hesitated to offer love and guidance to our friends, neighbors, and all the ones he worked with over the years. His legacy and wisdom live on in all the lives he touched. He loved life and loved sharing about how Jesus had come into his. His biggest message was that nobody is ever too far to be saved. If you were ever graced by his masterful storytelling, you know that he never left out one, single detail. An art that he learned from his own father. He loved to laugh, tell jokes, and share his slight mischievous side from time to time.
He left so much to be missed but we are celebrating the fact that he is now breathing Heaven’s air with our Savior.
In lieu of flowers, please reach out and help your neighbor or someone in need. That’s what he would truly want.
A Celebration of Life event will be planned at a later date.
We would also like to offer our sincere appreciation to Giles Carilion care team and first responders. They were all exceptional with his care and comfort.
Online guestbook can be signed or condolences may be sent to the family at www.broyles-shrewsbury.com. Arrangements by Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, Peterstown, WV.
