$99 million in Community Flood Preparedness Awards

$99 million in Community Flood Preparedness Awards 2Governor Glenn Youngkin today announced $99 million in grants and loans from the Virginia Community Flood Preparedness Fund (CFPF), providing critical funding to help Virginia communities better prepare for, respond to and reduce the impacts of flooding.

“Flooding is one of the most significant and costly natural hazards facing Virginia,” said Governor Glenn Youngkin. “These awards help communities move from planning to action, strengthening their ability to withstand flood events and recover more quickly when they occur.”

“The Youngkin Administration has been steadfast in its commitment to resilience building throughout the Commonwealth,” said Secretary of Natural and Historic Resources Stefanie Taillon. “This funding allows us to continue delivering on the Governor’s commitment to supporting communities across Virginia as they confront the challenges posed by flooding.”

“Investing in flood preparedness is an investment in public safety, economic stability, and long-term resilience,” said Chief Resilience Officer Greg Steele. “These grants empower communities to plan ahead, protect natural resources, and reduce the costly impacts of flooding before disasters occur.”

The fund, administered by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, supports localities and regional partners as they assess flood risks, plan for resilient growth and implement projects that protect lives, property and critical infrastructure.

“Effective flood preparedness starts with good data, thoughtful planning and strong local partnerships,” said DCR Acting Director Andrew Smith. “Round 6 awards will help communities better understand their risks and implement solutions that reduce damage, improve public safety and build long term resilience.”

The sixth round of the CFPF was announced in October offering grants and loans to support regions and localities to reduce the impacts of flooding in their communities.
