Flood Advisory Until 11 PM 4FLOOD ADVISORY IN EFFECT UNTIL 11 PM EDT THIS EVENING…

* WHAT…Flooding caused by excessive rainfall is expected.

* WHERE…Portions of southwest Virginia, including the following counties and independent cities, Bland, Carroll, City of Galax, City of Radford, Craig, Floyd, Giles, Grayson, Montgomery, Patrick, Pulaski, Smyth and Wythe and southeast West Virginia, including the following counties, Mercer and Monroe.

* WHEN…Until 1100 PM EDT.

* IMPACTS…Minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas. Ponding of water in urban or other areas is occurring or is imminent.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS… – At 802 PM EDT, Doppler radar indicated heavy rain due to thunderstorms. Minor flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly in the advisory area. Up to 1.5 inches of rain have fallen. – This includes the following streams and drainages… Bentley Branch, Beaver Creek, Altoona Branch, Bee Branch, Beaver Branch, Big Indian Creek, Adair Run, Ararat River and Back Creek. Additional rainfall amounts up to 2 inches are expected over the area. This additional rain will result in minor flooding. – Some locations that will experience flooding include… Blacksburg… Christiansburg… Radford… Bluefield… Pulaski… Wytheville… Galax… – http://www.weather.gov/safety/flood

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS…

Turn around, don’t drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.

Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding.
