Reyna, Sheila S.

Sheila Reyna, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, professor at Radford University and Virginia Tech, and long-time resident of Blacksburg, passed away peacefully in the early hours of Saturday, May 27, 2023. She was at home, surrounded by her loving family. She was 87 years old.

Born in Boston, MA in November 1935, Sheila’s greatest source of pride and joy came from her family – watching her children grow into accomplished individuals, and her unconditional love will forever be etched in their hearts. For decades, she gathered her family at the beach for summer vacations and at her home for holidays. A gifted pianist, she shared and passed on her passion for music to many. Sheila’s strong belief in education led her to teaching. She received her PhD in Education at Virginia Tech. She dedicated herself to inspiring students to develop themselves through education. Sheila retired from Radford University as a tenured outstanding professor. Throughout her life, students knew she would make room at the dining room table for those far away from home. She touched the hearts of many and left an indelible mark on the world.

As a mother, Sheila was a constant source of guidance, love, and encouragement to her children. She instilled in them the values of kindness, perseverance, and the joy of family.

Sheila is survived by her children, Sheila (Pedro), Agustin (Amanda), and Patricia (Jeff); her adoring grandchildren, Daniel (Laura), Ivette (Dillon), David (Kaitlin), Peter, Dylan (Cassidy), Abigail, Anthony (Corrine), Alexander, Matthew, Noah; her 2 great-grandchildren, (Charlie and Elsie) and her sister Patricia Behrman. She will also be deeply missed by her extended family and friends who will forever cherish the memories they shared, among them her sister by heart of 60 years, Vicki Luna and long-time travel companion Gene Maynard.

A celebration of Sheila’s life is being planned for Saturday, July 29, 2023, from 2:00-4:00 pm at the Blacksburg Community Center. Friends and family are invited to attend and pay their respects. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to a favorite cancer organization in Sheila’s honor.

Sheila Reyna’s radiant presence and her profound impact on the lives she touched will be dearly missed. She leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion, and an unwavering support of education that will forever inspire those who were fortunate enough to know her. May she rest in eternal peace.
