Moses, Howard Joseph

Moses, Howard Joseph 4Howard Joseph Moses, (87), passed away on Tuesday, Aug 8, 2023. He was born in Hartford, CT to Lillian and Samuel Moses.

Surviving are his loving wife of sixty- five years and very best friend for six years before that, Gloria Moses, and his two devoted children, Brenda Moses of Blacksburg, VA, and Clifford Moses of Hanover, MD. Also surviving are his two caring granddaughters, Jordan and Hope Bass of Blacksburg, and brother, Ronald Moses of RI.

Howard was a multi-faceted person. He was fiercely dedicated to the welfare of his wife, children, and grandchildren, doing everything to enhance their lives. He was a very fine friend to many, sincerely interested in their situations and always pleased to help. He was actively involved in community affairs including board positions in the Rotary, in Engineering Associations, and in his HOA. He thoroughly enjoyed group chat coffee and donut sessions, especially when they were centered on airplanes and US Military History.

He was a lifelong student. Howard holds a B S. Degree in Applied Mechanics from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, an M.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania, and an MBA in Research Management from the University of Connecticut. He was an academic, having taught engineering-related subjects at three different universities. He was a registered Professional Engineer, a Senior Life Member of the IEEE, and a licensed Private Pilot. Howard always followed several technical engineering publications so his knowledge was never dated, and he was able to contribute to current understandings.

After retiring from his industrial career which was primarily Vice-President of Engineering and Research for three major aerospace corporations, he joined the Research Faculty and became the Technical Director for the National Science Foundation-sponsored Center for Power Electronic Systems at Virginia Tech. He retired again, but a few months later was fully engaged with a company in the Corporate Research Center developing software tools to make the aerospace design process more efficient. He didn’t really retire until he was seventy-nine. Howard’s name is on the Wall of Honor of the Smithsonian Udvar Hazy Air and Space Museum.

A Memorial Service and Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, August 27, 2023, at two pm at the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel in Blacksburg. Rabbi Kathy Cohen of Temple Emanuel in Roanoke will officiate.
