Jones, Sandra Thompson
Sandra Leona Thompson Jones, 72, of Christiansburg, VA passed away at Carilion New River Valley Medical Center with her children by her side on Thursday, August 20, 2026. She was born in Coalwood, WV on May 5, 1954. She was the daughter of the late Melvin “Gene” and Delsie Thompson.
Those left to cherish her memory are her brothers, Don (Pam) Thompson of Bramwell, WV, Jerry (Michelle) Thompson of Coalwood, WV, and Bob Thompson of Mocksville, NC; her daughter, April (Scott) Eads and her son, Thomas Jones of Christiansburg, VA; her granddaughter and great-grandson, Kayla and Keoni Eads of Radford, VA, her grandson, Tyler Eads of Christiansburg, VA; her uncle, Hobert (Mary) Parnell of Bastian, VA; her “special sister”, Kathy Rutherford of Fairlawn VA; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Sandi attended Coalwood School and graduated from Big Creek High School in War, WV in 1972 where she loved being in the marching band and going to the school dances. Fun fact: she was once kissed by the singer Bobby Vinton (“Blue Velvet” and “Mr. Lonely”) at one of her marching band field trips. At the age of 17, while she was still a senior in high school, she got married and later on had her 2 children. In her 20s she became a devoted Christian and loved being in the Ladies’ Auxiliary at the Coalwood Pentecostal Holiness Church. While she loved being a housewife and a stay-at-home mom, at the age of 30, she pursued her dream of becoming a nurse.
In 1985 she graduated with a LPN degree from McDowell County Vocational School in Welch, WV. She worked at Welch Community Hospital and then went on to work for Dr. Vega at his private practice. In 1987 she moved with her family to Shawsville, VA and started working at Montgomery Regional Hospital in Blacksburg, VA in the med-surg department. In 1991 she started working for Dr. Zedalis at Allergy & Asthma Associates & Sleep Disorders. She was known to be a very hard worker and became labeled as “the best shot nurse”. She really loved Dr. Z and Mary. She retired from there in 2018. She loved all of her co-workers and patients and they loved her. She was born to be a Nurse. She tried to help everyone. And she did!
Sandi enjoyed going to the beach/lake/cabins in TN, movies, cookouts, playing cards, reading books, going out to eat, listening to music, and just sitting out on the porch. She loved being anywhere with her family and friends. She was a beautiful, sweet, honest, loyal, strong woman who loved God and put him First. She lived her life as a testament to God’s love, showing grace, kindness, and unwavering faith with everyone she met.
Two of her favorite Bible verses were John 3:16-17: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.”
Although it hurts us, it brings peace knowing she’s in Heaven with the Angels. Just as She was One on Earth.
The family would like to express our sincere gratitude to all the nurses and staff that truly helped Sandi especially Chaundra and Grace. We would also like to thank a couple of her special friends: Bridget and Michelle…And To Everyone who prayed for Sandi- we just love you all!
