Governor Urges Virginians to Serve as Officers of Election
Governor Abigail Spanberger today — on National Poll Worker Recruitment Day — encouraged more Virginians to consider serving as poll workers on and ahead of Election Day this upcoming November.
“Every year in our Commonwealth, poll workers play an essential role in supporting our secure, accurate, and fair elections and allowing Virginians to make their voices heard,” said Governor Abigail Spanberger. “We have some of the most talented and experienced election staff in the nation working at our polls. Ahead of our upcoming elections, I am encouraging more committed Virginians who would like to serve their communities to do so in this deeply meaningful way.”
Last week — on the anniversary of the Voting Rights Act, Governor Spanberger signed more than a dozen bills to strengthen voting rights, improve voter protections, and make elections more secure. The Governor also recently announced that since taking office in January, her administration has restored the right to vote for more than 66,000 Virginians who were formerly incarcerated and have served their time.
In Virginia, thousands of voters fulfill their civic duty every year by working in their polling place as Officers of Election — Virginia’s title for poll workers. The U.S. Election Assistance Commission has designated Tuesday, August 11 as National Poll Worker Recruitment Day, providing an opportunity to spotlight and celebrate these Virginians’ critical public service.
“Virginians have an opportunity to serve their community in a tremendously impactful way,” said Secretary of Administration Traci J. Deshazor. “Serving as an Officer of Election is a rewarding experience that allows people to take that extra step in strengthening and safeguarding our democracy.”
“Our Commonwealth relies on the service of thousands of Virginians every year who sign up to work at our polls,” said Commissioner of Elections Steven Koski. “This support is critical for our local registrars and electoral boards to ensure our elections are run well.”
