Crockett Announces Candidacy
Douglas Crockett, a Virginian, retired United Methodist pastor and attorney, has announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for Congress in Virginia’s 9th Congressional District.
A native of Wythe County, Crockett brings more than three decades of experience serving people across Virginia as a pastor, legal advocate, and community leader. He is a retired member of the Holston Conference of the United Methodist Church, a Virginia attorney retired from litigation practice, and now leads a part-time estate law education ministry for churches. He is a graduate of Emory & Henry University and William & Mary Law School.
Crockett has been married for 44 years, is a father and grandfather, and comes from a family deeply rooted in the 9th District. While he currently resides in Williamsburg, Virginia, he is committed to returning to Southwest Virginia to serve the people and communities he calls home. His campaign office will be located in Wytheville.
“I’m running because I love this region and the people who live here,” Crockett said. “I understand Southwest Virginia—its struggles, its strengths, and its potential. This district deserves leadership that listens, brings people together, and works hard to build a more prosperous and secure future.”
Over the course of his career, Crockett has built a reputation as a problem-solver and bridge-builder, facilitating dialogue, negotiation, and fair outcomes among congregations and litigants. For more than a decade, he carried the dual responsibility of pastoring a church while maintaining a full-time law practice, demonstrating a strong work ethic and commitment to service.
This is Crockett’s first run for public office. He says he is motivated by the current moment in American history, as fundamental rights and long-standing progress face growing threats.
“I believe this is a time that calls for principled leadership,” Crockett said. “We cannot move backward by undermining the freedoms and opportunities that define America. We must protect them—and expand them—for future generations.”
Crockett plans to travel extensively throughout the 9th District in the months leading up to the Democratic primary in June, meeting voters, listening to concerns, and sharing his vision for the district.
