Campbell, David Elvin

Campbell, David ElvinDavid Elvin Campbell, born August 11, 1942, in Orchard, WV, entered the golden gates of Heaven on August 6, 2024, at the age of 81. He was the son of the late Cecil Elvin Campbell and Pansy Dillion Campbell. Along with his parents, waiting to greet him at Heaven’s gate were his brothers, Roy Lee Campbell and Marion Gray Campbell, recently deceased sister, Mary Ellen Lindsay and infant grandson, Gabriel David Akers.

David was a faithful member of St. Paul United Methodist Church Christiansburg, where he was secretary of the Frank Wickham Sunday School Class as well as having served in many different positions in the church over the years. He was a dedicated member of the McDaniel Masonic Lodge 86 AF & AM where he served in many positions, most notably as Treasurer for 25 years and as The Worshipful Master. He was a charter member of the Belmont Jaycees and a past member of the New River Cruise Club, where he enjoyed taking his ’66 GT Mustang and hanging out with fellow car enthusiasts.

David started his Federal Government career working for The Treasury Department in Washington, D.C. He and the love of his life, Carol, decided the city life wasn’t for them and they relocated to Christiansburg, VA, where David continued to work for the government at R.D.A.I.S.A. (Research, Development & Acquisition Information Systems Agency (Army). In the early years, he worked as a computer programmer using Fortran and Cobalt, while attending night school to earn his college degree in accounting. He was great with numbers and prepared people’s taxes on nights and weekends. His federal career spanned over a total of 39.5 years, where he received many accolades for his accomplishments. He retired in 1999 as a Program Manager Analyst.

Since David was a person who liked to be busy, he got a job working part-time at Home Depot in Christiansburg. He enjoyed helping others and meeting new people. He made many new friends and acquaintances during his 12 years there.

David was not much of a talker, but as his grandchildren, Nathaniel and Mikaela say, “He was a man of few but meaningful words”. He was a friend to many, and a hero to his family. Everywhere David went, he made an impact on the people he encountered. His dry wit will forever be remembered by the people who knew him best. Others will remember as a great leader, mentor and friend to all.

His legacy will continue with his grandchildren and family. We will all strive to be like the Christian he was and look forward to seeing him again when we make our journey to Heaven.

Left to cherish his memory is his loving and devoted wife of 62 years, Carol Biggs Campbell; daughter, Melissa Campbell Akers (Missy) and husband Eric of Christiansburg; Grandson, Nathaniel Wayne Akers and wife Whitney of New Castle; granddaughter, Mikaela Samantha Akers of Christiansburg; Brother, Mason Elwood Campbell and wife Peggy of Roanoke, VA, his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Judy and Rodney Williams of Princeton, WV and his sweet cat, Sophie.

Funeral services will take place at Horne Funeral Home, Tuesday, August 13, 2024. Viewing will take place from 12-2pm, funeral immediately following at 2pm with Neal Turner and Mike Derflinger officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Cemetery with Masonic grave site services and Masonic members serving as Pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Shriners Children’s Hospital, the Christiansburg Fire Department or to the Christiansburg Rescue Squad.
