Blacksburg Announces Launch of The Local
The Town of Blacksburg is pleased to announce the opening of The Local on Wednesday, October 14, 2026. The Local is a downtown retail incubator created to support emerging entrepreneurs, strengthen the local economy, and bring new energy to the North Main Street corridor. Located at 414 North Main Street, The Local reflects the Town’s commitment to cultivating a diverse and welcoming downtown for residents, students, and visitors alike.
The Local transforms a previously vacant, environmentally remediated property located at a key downtown location into an active asset that serves the community. By repurposing the site for small‑business development, public use, and visitor engagement, the Town is fulfilling a long‑standing goal of bringing new activity to North Main Street while supporting entrepreneurs who can help increase the character of Downtown.
“Turning a previously underused property into a hub for fresh retail concepts and community activity is exactly the kind of community‑focused investment our residents have asked for,” Angie Marcolini, Business Solutions Manager for the Town of Blacksburg, shared. “The Local embodies the vision of a downtown that supports small businesses, creates a community resource to expand events, and remains a lively destination for everyone.”
Public Investment, Public Benefit
The decision to reinvest in the 414 North Main Street property grew from extensive public input gathered through Town planning efforts, the Let’s Talk Blacksburg platform, and multiple public meetings. American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding enabled the Town to redevelop the site, preserve it for community benefit, and create a space aligned with residents’ priorities: more local businesses, more daily activity, and more reasons to spend time downtown.
Leasing the building to Downtown Blacksburg Inc. (DBI) for $1 reflects a deliberate Town strategy to prioritize public impact over profit. This model enables DBI to focus on business development and programming while the community gains a robust amenity without added tax burden. As the incubator grows and becomes self‑sustaining, the public investment made today will continue generating long‑term economic and social benefits.
Growing Opportunities for Local Entrepreneurs
The Local will offer a supportive environment where early‑stage businesses can test retail concepts, develop skills, and gain access to resources that reduce the risk of opening a storefront. By lowering barriers for new entrepreneurs, the incubator advances one of the Town’s core goals: nurturing the next generation of locally owned businesses that contribute to Blacksburg’s distinct character. Additionally, the building will serve the wider community by offering meeting and event space and will function as a visitor information point highlighting the many experiences available downtown.
A Long‑Term Partnership and Vision for Downtown
The Town’s partnership with Downtown Blacksburg Inc. is central to The Local’s success. DBI will manage day‑to‑day operations, support business development, and oversee tenant programming within a structure designed for transparency and accountability. The Town’s long‑term vision is for the incubator to become a self‑sufficient, community‑serving amenity that strengthens downtown year after year.
The Local represents an important milestone in transforming the 414 North Main Street property into a place of opportunity, creativity, and community benefit. As the incubator begins welcoming businesses and visitors, it will serve as a dynamic introduction to the downtown corridor and a new spark in the heart of Blacksburg.
Later this month, Downtown Blacksburg Inc. will share details about incubator programming and introduce the first group of businesses selected to join The Local. Their announcement will spotlight the entrepreneurs who will bring energy, creativity, and new retail concepts to the space from day one.
