Barking for Help: Raise the Roof, Roof!

Barking for Help: Raise the Roof, Roof!Pearisburg, VA – The Giles County Historical Society is barking for help—and we mean it! The beloved Johnston House, a cornerstone of Giles County’s history, is in dire need of critical repairs, starting with its failing roof. Without urgent intervention, this cherished landmark may be lost to time.

That’s why we’re launching the “Raise the Roof, Roof!” campaign—a community-driven effort to save the historic 1829 Johnston House, originally built by Andrew and David Johnston, two of Giles County’s earliest settlers. With each passing season, the structure faces increasing risk, and now, the roof’s deterioration threatens the entire building.

“The Johnston House is more than bricks and mortar—it’s a living reminder of our shared past,” said a spokesperson for the historical society. “Now, we need the community’s help to keep it standing for generations to come.”

Barking for Help: Raise the Roof, Roof! 4Why It Matters:
Preserve a landmark: Protect a significant piece of Virginia history.
Honor a legacy: Celebrate the Johnston family, who shaped the region.
Restore & protect: Prevent irreversible damage to this historic site.
Strengthen community ties: Unite in a shared mission to save our heritage.

A Legacy Worth Saving
The Johnston House has witnessed nearly 200 years of history, serving as a family home, business hub, and even a Civil War headquarters for Brigadier General Rutherford B. Hayes. It also housed the medical office of Dr. Harvey Green Johnston, making it an integral part of the community’s past.

How You Can Help
