Governor Celebrates Start of Open Enrollment
RICHMOND, VA — Following the start of open enrollment on November 1, Governor Abigail Spanberger today is encouraging Virginians to explore their options on Virginia’s Insurance Marketplace to see if they qualify for the new Virginia Premium Savings program. The $150 million program — created by the Governor and General Assembly — will help up to 200,000 Virginians save hundreds of dollars on average on their health insurance premiums through Virginia’s Insurance Marketplace.
“Every Virginian deserves access to quality, affordable healthcare, and I want to make sure no one misses an opportunity to get covered just because they think they can’t afford it,” said Governor Abigail Spanberger. “Through the Virginia Premium Savings program, we’re helping to make healthcare more affordable for families across the Commonwealth — with some seeing their monthly premiums lowered by 90 percent. During open enrollment, I’m encouraging Virginians to look at their options and see what kind of savings are available to them.”
Governor Spanberger created the Virginia Premium Savings program to lower healthcare premiums by as much as 70 percent, but new estimates show that some Virginians will see their premiums decrease by more than 90 percent. Additionally, more than 50,000 Virginians could qualify for a $0 monthly premium because of these affordability investments.
The new state investments come after President Trump and his allies in Congress let federal tax credits expire that made healthcare coverage on the Marketplace much more affordable. In the aftermath of this decision, nearly 100,000 Virginians did not reenroll in Virginia’s Insurance Marketplace.
“If you looked at health insurance last year and couldn’t make it fit your budget, take another look,” said Secretary of Health and Human Resources Marvin B. Figueroa. “There is new help through Virginia Premium Savings that could bring the monthly cost within reach. For someone already stretching every paycheck, that can make a real difference. Visit marketplace.virginia.gov to see what you could save.”
Last month, Governor Spanberger celebrated the newly established Virginia Premium Savings Program at a community resource fair at Gethsemane Community Fellowship Baptist Church in Norfolk. The Governor brought together advocates, local officials, and faith leaders to highlight the new savings and encourage Virginians to see if they qualify. The fair also featured community partners, nonprofit organizations, and state agencies offering screenings, mammograms, flu shots, and support for Virginians needing help enrolling in health insurance.
