Knapp, Sr., Craig Evans

Craig Evans Knapp, Sr. passed away peacefully at home on September 8, 2026 and is now rejoicing in Heaven. He was born August 28, 1946 and recently celebrated his 80th birthday. Craig was the last living son of John Robert and Florence Evans Knapp of Scarsdale, New York. He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings June Halloby, John R. Knapp Jr., Arthur Knapp, and Marilyn Darling.

He is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Patricia Ann Knapp; son Craig Knapp Jr. and wife Katrina; son William “Bill” Knapp; daughter Krystle Smith and husband Shannon; and daughter Alyssa Schmitt and husband Ashley; grandchildren Cory Knapp, Leah Dalton, Gwendalyn Knapp, Abigail Knapp, Matthew Smith, and baby Katharine Schmitt; great grandchildren Aundrea Stump and Avery Stump; and many nieces and nephews. Craig was immensely proud of his family and would often share about them with friends.

Craig was passionate about farming and raising animals, including American Blackbelly Sheep, fox, mink, and any other animal he found fascinating. He was a talented arborist for nearly 50 years, working for the Roosevelt Estate in New York and maintaining the Charter Oak in Connecticut. He also had the pleasure of working on the estates of Farrah Fawcett and Arthur Miller (playwright) in Connecticut, as well as many local historic locations. On any given Saturday, he could be found in Xpress getting breakfast, or at Slaughters’ flea market selling or searching for deals. When lunch time rolled around on any day, you could find him at Geraldi’s chatting with Albert and Gail.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to special friends Martha and Rocky Bonham for their support, as well as all his caregivers, therapists and nurses including Krislyn, Jocelyn, and Medi Health and Hospice Services. Not only did they care for Craig, they cared for and supported his family.

Visitation services will be held on Tuesday, September 15th at Gardner Funeral Home in Floyd Virginia from 5 to 7 p.m., to be followed by a prayer service by Pastor Jeff Pickett of Hillsville Pentecostal Holiness Church.
