Akers, Nelva Compton Viers
Nelva (Compton) Viers Akers, age 91, of Christiansburg, Virginia, went to be with our Heavenly Father on the Lord’s Day, Sunday, August 23, 2026. She was born in Dickinson County, VA, on January 2, 1935, to the late Claude Swanson and Winnie Gay Wright Compton.
She was preceded in death by her late husband, Alvin Herbert Akers, and her first husband, Clarence “Mink” Viers; four brothers, Carl, Don, Gordon, and Mack “Whitey” Compton; and sister Fran “Cheek” Cumbee.
She is survived by her loving family: Daughter Pamala Viers (Lance Terpenny); Granddaughters Jocy Vuiller (Matt Vuiller) and Sammi Sheppard; Grandson Lincoln Sheppard; Great-Grandchildren Caius, Miles, and Evelyn; Sisters Dorothy Howery (Jimmy Howery), Cathy Meador, and Pat Barnett (Melvin Barnett); and many loving nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law, and cousins from Virginia and beyond.
Nelva was lovingly called “Neb” by most that knew her. She was well-known in Ellett Valley for her love of gardening, cake-baking, and feeding the birds on her back porch. No one ever went hungry in her house – she always had delicious country home cookin’ ready to eat for anyone that walked in the front door. She was a strong, Christian woman and proud member of North Fork Baptist Church. Neb loved her family fiercely and will be remembered fondly as Mom, Nana, and the “Mother of Ellett Valley.”
Funeral services will be conducted in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, August 29 at 11am with Dr. Thomas Harvey officiating. The family will receive friends beginning at 10am. Interment will follow at the North Fork Baptist Church Cemetery immediately after the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warriors Program.
