Thompson, Sandra Williams
Sandra Lee (Williams) Thompson – our mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend— passed into the presence of her Lord and Savior on April 22, 2026. She was born in Radford, VA on July 1, 1949, to Harmon Edmon Williams and Ada Lee (Akers) Williams, both deceased. She was also preceded in death by her loving husband of over 58 years, Donny Ray Thompson
Sandra was a devoted wife and mother to her husband and children and did not continue her education until her children were independent. She graduated from Roanoke College with a Degree in Accounting and continued to work up until her death.
She was a member of First Baptist Church of Roanoke for over 50 years. During that time, she volunteered with the bus ministry and the preschool department. She actively participated in multiple mission trips, both domestic and internationally. She supported the Samaritan Inn, Rescue Mission and other local needs in the Roanoke Valley.
What Sandra enjoyed most was traveling; planning and discovering new adventures, whether it was for a day, weekend or longer. She was known as “General” Sandra to the family when it came to planning a vacation. She had accounted for every minute of these trips and those who accompanied her on her travels, never missing out on any of the experience. One of her favorite trips was going to Alaska, to celebrate her 50th Anniversary with the love of her life, Donny. She continued to camp and travel with her family, making memories along the way.
She is survived by her children: Donna Laurens (Charles) of Virginia Beach, VA and Dwayne Thompson (Carol) of Copper Hill, VA; Her grandchildren Chelsea Lindo (Jaine), Charlie Laurens (Christina), Chandler Laurens (Melani), and her great grandson, Yoel Donny Laurens all of Virginia Beach, VA. Her siblings, Larry Williams (Cathy) of The Villages, FL and Carol Ann Bowman (Tony) of Pembroke, VA., as well as many nieces and nephews, friends and extended family members who will miss her dearly.
There will be a time of visitation on Friday May 29,2026 beginning at 12 pm at First Baptist Church of Roanoke, 321 Marshall Ave SW, Roanoke, VA 24016 followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 1pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a memorial donation be made to: First Baptist Church Missions (PO Box 2799 Roanoke, VA 24001) or Cannaday Cemetery c/o Dwayne Thompson, 1655 Hummingbird Lane Copper Hill, VA 24079. (Her final resting place.)
