Proffitt, Velvie Hill

Proffitt, Velvie HillVelvie Jean Proffit, age 78, of Floyd County in Willis passed away May 16, 2024 in the hospital surrounded by her loving family. Born on September 2, 1945 she was the daughter of the late Clarence and Goldie Hill.

The love of her life was the late Reverend and Pastor Raymond F. Proffitt of 64 years who passed away February 17, 2024. They were reunited just 3 short months later. They are gone from our sight, but forever in our hearts.

Together, they shared a life of love, devotion, and service to the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She was a loving and doting mother, momaw, great-grandma, aunt, sister and friend to many. She was a great leader to all. An excellent seamstress, she sometimes made her family’s clothes so they could be dressed in modest apparel. She loved to play the organ in church and sing. She also mastered the accordion. Her heart was filled with the fire and Holy Ghost. She was the backbone of the church. Velvie and the late Reverend Raymond Proffitt were great leaders to their family and community, serving many years as they pastored for the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ in Riner, Virginia. She loved God. She loved her sons and daughters, so much that when she put food on the table and there weren’t enough pork chops to go around, she didn’t eat them, her husband and children came first.

As we bid farewell to this great woman of God, let us remember this first and greatest commandment; “Thou shalt Love the Lord thy God with all they heart, and with all thy soul, and with all they mind; and the second is like unto it, thou shalt Love thy neighbor as thyself. Matthew 22:37-39.” Sister Velvie truly lived by all of these words. Her legacy will continue to flourish in the lives of those she touched and in the hearts of her family.

In addition to her parents and beloved husband, Velvie Proffitt was preceded in death by her son, Raymond Proffitt; granddaughter, Stephany Proffitt; grandson, Matthew Proffitt; great-grandson, Tyler Proffitt; sisters, Lola Hicks, Sue Newberry; and brother, Bobby Hill.

Left to cherish her memory to their hearts are her sons, Larry Proffitt (Kathy), Gary Proffitt (Betty), and Jeff Proffitt; daughters, Deborah Ray (Ronnie), Kathy Horton (Randy), and Velvie Patrie (Chris); 20 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; sister, Patricia Page; and brother, Jerry Hill. In addition, she carried a great love for her animals, Tiny Baby, Baby, Precious, and Puppy Joe.

The family would like to thank Novant Health-Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina for they great care they provided for Velvie and the family in their last hours of need.

The family will receive friends in a time of visitation on Thursday, May 23, 2024 from 12:00 PM until 2:00 PM in the Kendall Funeral Home in Pembroke, Virginia.
