$444,816 HHS Grant to Blacksburg’s VCOM
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has awarded the Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM), based in Blacksburg, Virginia, a $444,816 grant for research and training related to complementary and alternative medicine. * U.S. Congressman Morgan Griffith (R-VA) issued the following statement:
“The Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine trains and educates gifted physicians in their commitment to promote healthy communities, including those in underserved and rural areas.
“This grant for $444,816 helps VCOM direct more resources to explore potential medicines and educate the medical community.”
BACKGROUND
The awarding office of these funds is the HHS National Center for Complementary & Integrative Health.
Blacksburg’s Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine opened in 2003 as a partnership between VCOM and Virginia Tech.
This July, VCOM received recognition from the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), earning ACCME Accreditation for meeting rigorous standards in “delivering education that enhances healthcare professionals’ competence and performance.”
*According to Cleveland Clinic, complementary medicine refers to types of treatments such as massage, meditation, music therapy, guided imagery and dietary supplements.
