Work Zone Cameras Now in Operation

Virginia’s work zone speed safety cameras are live — and here’s why they matter.

In 2024, speeding caused 1,143 crashes in Virginia work zones. Seven people were killed. Speeding is behind nearly a third of all work zone crashes — and nearly half of the fatalities and serious injuries. These aren’t abstract numbers. They’re workers and drivers who didn’t make it home.

Authorized under Virginia state law, the cameras are posted with required signage and active whenever workers are present. If you’re caught driving 10+ mph over the posted limit, a citation is mailed to the registered vehicle owner — every one reviewed by a Virginia State Police trooper.
