Whitlow, Betty Dent

Betty Jane Dent Whitlow, 97, of Peterstown, WV, passed away peacefully at the Carilion Giles Community Hospital in Pearisburg, Virginia, on Sunday, December 21, 2025. Born on April 16, 1928, in Glen Lyn, Virginia, the daughter of E. S. “Mike” Dent and Myrtle Alice Thompson Dent, Betty married Oakie L. Whitlow on August 31 ,1949, and enjoyed 56 years of marriage before his death in 2005.

Betty was an active and dedicated member of the Glen Lyn Baptist Church for more than 75 years. Always creative, Betty made beautiful quilts and lovely crocheted items, many of which are treasured by friends and family members.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Oakie; son, Michael C. “Mick” Whitlow; sisters, Willie J. Dent, Jean H. Dent, and Patsy D. Clyburn; and brother, Jack Dent.

Survivors include her sister, Mary Frances Dent; daughter-in-law, C. Jayne Whitlow of Vienna, WV; granddaughters, Amanda E. Whitlow, of Parkersburg, WV, and Kathryn M. “Katy” Whitlow, of Johnstown, OH; many nieces and nephews; the Don Thompson family, and special great niece, Anna Hill, and her son, Granger. Also, a thank you to special friends, Jamie and Rhonda Purdue, and the Beasley family, Steve, Teresa, and Debra.

Visitation will be held Saturday, December 27, at the Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, 111 Market St., Peterstown, from 12:00PM to 1:00PM, followed by a service of remembrance at 1:00PM with Lay Speaker Gerald Terry. Interment will follow at Peterstown Cemetery.
