Via, Billy Eugene

Via, Billy EugeneBilly Eugene Via departed this life on October 11, 2024, four months to the day after his 100th birthday. Born June 11, 1924, to Samuel Eugene and Mattie Carroll Via, he weighed only one pound at birth.

He was predeceased by his parents; brothers, Tommy Via and Bobby Via; sister, Sue Via Amos; former wife, Arlene Burgess Via; and nephew, Cap Davis.

He was a veteran, having proudly served in the United States Army during World War II in the Battle of the Bulge. After coming home to his family, he held multiple positions, including serving for twenty years at Radford Arsenal. He also served as a realtor in this community for Midkiff Realty. When he found the time to enjoy his hobbies, he was an avid hunter; enjoyed tending the garden that he so loved; watching the New York Yankees (especially Aaron Judge); his Virginia Tech Hokies; and the former Washington Redskins.

He is survived by his wife, Nannie M. Via; children, Vicki Via, Michael Via and partner, Wendell Roberson; Diane Collins and her husband, Barry; granddaughter, Amber Martin and her husband, Steven; great-granddaughter, Sierra Freeman and her husband, Cory; great-great granddaughter, Ember Elaine Freeman; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, from 12:00 PM until 1:00 PM at Riverview Baptist Church. A funeral service will follow at 1:00 PM with Pastors Terry Easter and Mike Mitchener officiating. Following the service, Military Rights will be conducted by the United States Army and American Legion Posts 68, 311, and 415, and he will be laid to rest at Birchlawn Abby in Pearisburg.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to Riverview Baptist Church (219 Big Stony Creek Road Ripplemead, Virginia 24150), or to the families of Giles County, Virginia who are recovering from the devastating floods of Hurricane Helene (Giles County Disaster Relief Fund, which is set up through any branch of the National Bank of Blacksburg or you may visit www.zeffy.com/en-US/donation-form/492cda74-2485-4229-b22a-5c88ab67b784 ).
