Town Service Lines Classified as Non-Lead
CHRISTIANSBURG, VA – The Town of Christiansburg is pleased to announce the successful submission of its service line inventory to the Virginia Department of Health (VDH), in compliance with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Lead and Copper Rule Revisions (LCRR). Thanks to the Town’s compliance efforts, all service lines in the Town are classified as non-lead according to VDH guidelines.
Earlier this year, the Town launched the Service Line Discovery Program to ensure that all requirements of LCRR were met by the Oct.16, 2024, deadline. Since the launch of the program, the Town has worked diligently to identify the material of all service lines in its network. After completing a thorough review of historical records and carrying out extensive field investigations, the Town has concluded with greater than 95% confidence that there are no lead or galvanized requiring replacement service lines in the service area.
“Determining that service lines in the Town are non-lead is a significant achievement that underscores Christiansburg’s commitment to protecting our infrastructure and ensuring the highest quality of water for our customers,” said Public Works Director Jim Lancianese. “This milestone is a testament to the diligent efforts of our public works and water quality teams, who have worked tirelessly to maintain the excellent quality of our drinking water.”
The complete inventory of the Town’s service lines can be accessed on the Service Line Discovery Program webpage. Customers can type in their address on the geospatial map and easily look up the material of their full-service line. The inventory features information on piping material and helps customers understand the status of their water service connections.
“Submitting our service line inventory to VDH is a critical step in our ongoing efforts to ensure the safety of our water supply,” said Utilities Assistant Director Justin Shepherd. “I am incredibly proud of our team’s dedication and the proactive measures we have taken to comply with the EPA’s rule.”
The Town of Christiansburg will continue to document service line material information during routine utility operations, such as service line maintenance or water meter readings, and will update the initial inventory accordingly.
