Town of Christiansburg’s Holiday Events

Town of Christiansburg's Holiday Events 4The holidays will look a little different in 2020, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be just as festive and fun! The Town of Christiansburg is offering a variety of virtual and contactless ways to celebrate this year.

  • Virtual Tree Lighting
    • On Dec. 2, the Town will stream the lighting of the tree in Town Square. The live stream will occur at dusk on the Town’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/cburgvagov.
  • Calls from the North Pole
    • The Christiansburg Parks and Recreation Department has been in contact with the North Pole, and everyone, including Santa is very busy! On Dec. 2, Santa has agreed to call children 8 years old and younger, starting at 5:30 p.m. For Santa to call, you need to fill out a form located at the Christiansburg Recreation Center or online (here) and return it by Tuesday, Dec. 1, by 5 p.m. Depending on how many forms he receives, Santa may need additional time to call all the children, so if you do not receive a call on Dec. 2, you will be called on Dec. 4. Keep the phone lines open!
  • Virtual Christmas at the Market
    • Christmas at the Market is going virtual! The Town originally planned to have an in-person Christmas at the Market and tree lighting downtown on Dec. 10; however, due to increasing cases of COVID-19 and Governor Northam’s recent executive order limiting gatherings to 25, we are moving our market online and will not gather in person this year. You can still support all of your favorite vendors and find everything on your Christmas list by visiting www.christiansburg.org/marketshop on Dec. 3-10.
  • Santa’s Coming to Town
    • Santa’s sleigh is in the shop, getting fixed up before his big night. In the meantime, he’s borrowing one of Christiansburg Fire Department’s trucks to visit our town! Santa will start cruising through Christiansburg at 6:30 p.m. each night from Dec. 7–10 and on Dec. 12 and will drive until the route is complete. Just step outside your home to give him a wave as he drives by! Remember Santa is very busy, and though he’d love to travel down every road in town, he just can’t make it fit into his schedule. He tried to incorporate as many areas of town as he could, taking into consideration his very large firetruck sleigh and making sure he could easily navigate down each street. He encourages families to find the nearest street to them that he will be riding down and walk over to wave hello. He’ll be driving very slowly through these neighborhoods, so just keep an ear out for sirens to know when he’ll be making his way through. Santa would like to remind everyone to watch their distance and wear a mask if needed when walking over to see him or if coming into contact with other groups. For a map of his route each night and for more information, visit www.christiansburg.org/homefortheholidays.
  • Reverse Christmas Parade
    • This year, in place of its traditional Christmas Parade, the Town will be offering a reverse parade at Uptown Christiansburg (formerly NRV Mall) on Dec. 11 from 7-9 p.m. Floats will be stationary (parked) in the New River Community College (NRCC) section of the Uptown Christiansburg parking lot while spectators slowly drive through on New River Road. This year’s parade theme is “Light up the tree, it’s Christmas you see.” Floats will be spaced to adhere to social distancing guidelines, and there is a limit to the number of participants on each float dependent on its size. The inclement weather date is Dec. 14.
  • Light Up Your Home for the Holidays
    • The Christiansburg Parks and Recreation Department is hosting a residential holiday decorating contest. A member(s) from our staff will visit each destination to determine the top 10 entries. The top 10 entries will be placed on the Town’s Facebook page (www.facebook.com/cburgvagov) for voting by the community. Voting will begin on Friday, Dec. 18, and run through 9 a.m. on Monday, Dec. 21. Once all applications are received, decorated homes who gave permission will be included in a map for others to visit on a self-guided light tour. To register for the contest, please complete this form by Dec. 16 at noon.
