The Week of the Young Child

This week the New River Valley Chapter of VAAEYC invites all families in the NRV to join in the fun activities of Celebrating the Week of the Young Child, culminating in a free Children’s Extravaganza at the Virginia Tech Duck Pond on Saturday, April 21st from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

NRV VAAEYC is the local chapter of the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), a non-profit association that promotes high-quality learning for preschool children by connecting practice, policy and research.

NAEYC’s Week of the Young Child celebrates young children and their families with hands-on collaborative activities encouraging movement and healthy lifestyles through music, food, and art. NRV VAAEYC has scheduled a full week of events to engage and celebrate young children and their families:

On Saturday, April 14th Story Time comes alive at the Children’s’ Museum of Blacksburg with an interactive session featuring Joelle Shenk and Mayor Hager-Smith at 1 p.m.

Starting Monday April 16th, storefronts, libraries and other venues throughout the NRV will feature self-portraits highlighting our youngest learners as they see themselves. Also, consider visiting Gran Rodeo in Christiansburg on April 16th. Show the flyer on the Facebook page of NRV VAAEYC to your server and part of your check will go toward supporting early childhood education in the NRV.

On Tasty Tuesday April 17th dining at Avellino’s will support both the NRV VAAEYC and the Children’s Museum of Blacksburg.

Coach Frank Beamer is the keynote speaker on Work Together Wednesday April 18th at the Power of Play Luncheon. The event is from 12 – 1 at the German Club of Virginia Tech and will benefit the Children’s Museum of Blacksburg. Tickets available at www.tinyurl.com/Powerofplay2018

On April 20th, Family Friday, the first 150 visitors will receive free admission at the Children’s Museum of Blacksburg. This event is made possible by Virginia Autism & Behavior Consulting with free ice cream (while supplies last) provided by Freedom First Credit Union.

The Week of the Young Child Celebration in the New River Valley culminates in the Children’s Extravaganza. More than 20 exhibitors will be entertaining our youngest community members and their families with FREE activities including arts and crafts, music and other fun projects. A free bouncy castle will be there for all our young jumpers! Starting at 10 a.m., the Children’s Extravaganza’s fun lasts until 2 p.m. at the Virginia Tech Duck Pond.

Local activities for the NAEYC Week of the Young Child in the NRV are made possible through sponsorship from Avellino’s, Blacksburg Early Learning Center, Children’s Museum of Blacksburg, Freedom First, Nano Sonic NRV Chapter of VAAEYC and the Virginia Autism & Behavior Consulting.
