Simmons Awarded Golden Ticket Scholarship
In an exciting recognition for the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine, Giles County native Zach Simmons ‘25 was awarded the prestigious Golden Ticket Scholarship from the American Osteopathic Foundation.
Simmons received the recognition while attending the Osteopathic Medical Education conference in Orlando, Florida, on Oct. 8. This scholarship annually recognizes and supports exceptional osteopathic medical students who, despite financial obstacles, continue to achieve academic excellence, display leadership skills, make a commitment to giving back to their communities and embody osteopathic tenants and philosophy.
Three other nominated students were recognized and awarded a $5,000 educational scholarship, while Zach was able to return to Virginia with the “Golden Ticket” and a $20,000 educational scholarship. One of the factors in his successful award bid was his organization of last year’s Giles County Health Fair.
According to Zach, “The Giles Health Fair is by far the most important and amazing outreach event I have been involved in. Returning to my home community, showing them that I care about everybody there and want to instill the value of education and opportunity to the people is what I plan to continue to do throughout my life as a physician and beyond that.”
