Significant Snow & Ice Expected

Significant Snow & Ice Expected 2Expected ice accumulations continue to increase south of US-460, with now 0.25-0.50″+ possible. Snow/sleet totals have decreased slightly, especially near the NC/VA state line, as warmer air aloft is expected to push further north into Virginia.

This change will mean higher chances of power outages and treacherous roads. With some snow/sleet falling initially, the coating of ice on top late Sunday will only worsen the impacts felt. With much colder air moving in behind the system, these impacts will linger for days.

Behind the winter storm this weekend, brutally cold temperatures are forecast. Tuesday morning lows will be near to below zero across the area, with wind chills of -10 to -20 degrees west of the Blue Ridge.

Temperatures continue to be dangerously cold, likely staying near or below freezing for all of next week. Lows each night will be in the single digits, with another shot of cold air late next week.
