Robbery leads to police chase
At approximately 2:25pm, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from the Elliston Food Mart on 9311 Roanoke Road in Elliston with reports of a suspect brandishing a firearm at employees.
At approximately 2:29pm the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office alerted Christiansburg Police of the incident. The suspect drove away from the scene in a small silver SUV into the town of Christiansburg where Christiansburg Police attempted to stop the vehicle.
The suspect brandished a firearm at the officer and fled in the vehicle. Officers pursued the suspect’s vehicle across the bypass to the Spradlin Farms area where the suspect turned around and drove back across the bypass to I-81. The pursuit eventually exited I-81 at exit 137 in Salem and continued toward downtown Salem before turning onto Mill Lane and then Riverside Drive where the suspect crashed.
At several points during the pursuit the suspect fired multiple shots out of the vehicle window, toward officers.
The suspect was transported to Lewis Gale Hospital in Salem to be treated for injuries sustained in the crash. No officers were hit by gunfire. No officers fired their weapons.
The investigation remains ongoing. Multiple law enforcement offices responded in pursuit, including the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Salem Police Department and Virginia State Police.
