Road Maintenance Program in Blacksburg
In early October, the Town of Blacksburg will begin a town‐wide road maintenance project called Full Depth Reclamation (FDR); an economical, ecofriendly pavement rehabilitation project. In contrast to paving, FDR corrects underlying deterioration issues in the base material of the road.
During the course of FDR, up to 14 inches of road material can be removed, rather than removing only the top few inches as is typical in surface paving. FDR pulverizes the existing surface asphalt and combines it with the existing base material, creating a freshly mixed, stronger base layer. If more strength is required, stabilizing materials can be added, such as gravel or cement, to increase the integrity of the base layer.
When FDR is complete, the final step is compaction followed by paving. Throughout the project residents will experience some disruption, but will retain access to their driveways and to clean up and collection services happening during the same timeframe.
This FDR phase will focus on Town roads that are older and in need of deep repair. Residents who live on streets where FDR is taking place will receive communication about the project via mail.
