Road Crews are Working: Stay off the Roads

Road Crews are Working: Stay off the Roads 2Snow plow operators and contractors with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) are actively engaged in plowing, treating and applying abrasives on interstates and primary routes (those numbered 1-599) throughout western Virginia as this winter weather continues. The major routes are VDOT’s top priority for snow removal during a weather event.

Motorists should continue to avoid all nonessential travel until after the storm ends Monday and the conditions improve. Roads in western Virginia are snow covered and icy from snow and sleet. Snow transitioned to sleet and freezing rain across the region overnight Saturday into Sunday.

With extremely low temperatures continuing into next week, anything falling is expected to remain on many surfaces until temperatures rise. Drivers should not expect bare pavement.

Drivers are reminded that snowplow operators will work on primary routes until winter weather has ended and these major roads are plowed and treated before any work begins on secondary roads (those numbered above 600) and neighborhood streets.

VDOT does not plow snow on private roads or driveways. Residents are encouraged to shovel driveways to the right when facing the roadway to reduce how much snow a plow pushes back into a driveway as it passes.
