Rettig, Phyllis Brown
Phyllis B. Rettig of Blacksburg, VA, passed away on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, surrounded by family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank H. Brown and Pauline Kivett Brown.
Phyllis was born in Julian, NC. She graduated from Southeast Guilford High School, received a B.A. from UNC Charlotte, and a master’s degree from Appalachian State University. She taught kindergarten for 37 years, the last 17 at Belview Elementary School. She was adored by her students, many of whom have continued to stay in touch with her.
After retiring from teaching, she served as the office administrator for Blacksburg Baptist Church (now Church on Main) for 5 years. She continued to serve at the church and loved being part of the Young at Heart and MomCo programs.
Phyllis was a beautiful representation of being the hands and feet of Christ. She loved others sacrificially, cared for others above herself, and was able to brighten any room with her infectious personality and warmth.
Phyllis is survived by her husband of 39 years, David Rettig; son, Dustin; daughter, Eva McGuire (Zach); two beloved grandsons, Miles and Isaiah; brother, Neil Brown (Patricia); nephew, Tate (Catherine); niece, Amanda Schroder (Thomas); four great-nieces and great-nephews; and numerous cousins.
A celebration of life will be held at McCoy Funeral Home in Blacksburg on Saturday, January 3, 2026. Visitation will be from 2:30–4:00 p.m., with a service following. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Church on Main memorial fund.
She will be greatly missed by family, friends, and all who knew her.
