Pursuit leads to multiple arrests

On 02/11/2020 at approximately 5:16 pm, Sergeant OB Harris with the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office, initiated a traffic stop on a Chevrolet Silverado, which was displaying an improper registration. The Silverado was stopped on Rt. 8, near the intersection of Alum Ridge Rd.

Sergeant Harris approached the vehicle and observed five occupants inside and spoke with the driver briefly. While running the driver’s information, the Silverado sped off and travelled north on Rt. 8, back towards Montgomery County. Sergeant Harris and members from the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office, engaged in a short pursuit lasting approximately ten miles. The Silverado came to a stop at the end of Five Points Rd in Riner, Va.

The driver, later identified as Melvin E. Leftwich Jr., immediately fled on foot, headed north. It was also found that Leftwich Jr. had two outstanding warrants for Felony Shoplifting and Misdemeanor Failure to Appear. Members from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, Christiansburg PD, and Virginia State Police responded and a manhunt began with the assistance of a VSP K-9 unit. Leftwich Jr. was later arrested.

The following passengers were also arrested: Vanessa B. Parks, 34, outstanding Montgomery County warrant for Probation Violation, Joanna Spurrier, 30, outstanding Montgomery County warrant for Probation Violation.

During a vehicle search, members of the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office and the VSP recovered drug paraphernalia and other items of interest. After interviewing the passengers, it was found that Spurrier was in possession of methamphetamines.

Parks and Spurrier were both taken into custody by the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and transported to the Montgomery County Jail. Leftwich Jr. will face charges for Felony Eluding, Driving Revoked and Improper Registration in Floyd County General District Court. Spurrier will face charges with Floyd County Circuit Court at a later date.
