New Montgomery County Agriculture Extension Agent!
Meredith Hoggatt is originally from Draper, VA where she grew up on her family’s cow-calf operation. She received her B.S. in Zoology with a concentration in Ecology and a minor in Insect Biology from the University of Wyoming in 2012.
After graduating college, Hoggatt returned to Southwest Virginia and worked as the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and Compliance Coordinator at Red Sun Farms in Dublin, VA. There, Hoggatt was responsible for creating and implementing the IPM strategy for the 18 acres of tomatoes under glass while also assisting in the development of the food safety program and non-GMO and organic certification/compliance.
She returned to Wyoming where she served as the Greenhouse Coordinator for the UW Williams Conservatory from 2015-2018. This position combined her passion for plants, insects and outreach while sparking her desire to work in extension. Following this position, Hoggatt served as the Horticulture Program Coordinator for Campbell County Extension in Gillette, WY.
She relocated back to Draper, VA with her husband in July of 2020 to be closer to family and to be more involved on the family farm. She returned to work for Red Sun Farms as their Greenhouse Supervisor/Student Coordinator training employees in greenhouse production activities (crop care, deleafing, harvesting) and pest/disease scouting.
Hoggatt is currently working on her M.S. in Natural Resources and hopes to apply this knowledge towards encouraging sound agricultural practices to further the success of producers in the county.
She would love to get to know the needs of Montgomery County’s agricultural producers and citizens, so feel free to contact her at the Montgomery Co. Extension Office at (540)382-5790 or via email at mhoggatt@vt.edu.
