Munson, Hugh Patrick
Hugh Patrick (Pat) Munson was born on July 5, 1959 on a US Military base in Stuttgart, Germany. The son of Helen Crane Munson and Hugh Munson, Pat was one of 8 children who grew up on a series of military bases as part of a very tight-knit family. His athletic ability was apparent at an early age, and Pat enjoyed and excelled in sports from cross country running to rugby.
Pat followed in his father’s footsteps, graduating from the United States Military Academy (West Point) and Army Ranger School before serving in the Army Corps of Engineers. Pat’s career also included a role in Operations at the global charter airline World Airways, which provided more opportunities to travel the world and enjoy different cultures, people, and cuisines.
While Pat was stationed in Toronto for World Airways he met the woman he would marry, Beth. Pat and Beth resided in Toronto until earlier this year when Pat relocated back to Blacksburg, VA where his parents had settled after his father’s retirement from the military.
Pat and Beth enjoyed travel, art, wine, hiking, and being with family and friends. Most of all they enjoyed time and long walks with their precious Jack Russell/Pug/Chihuahua blend, Picasso.
Pat’s last occupation was Office Manager and Tax preparer at H&R Block.
A prolific reader, ardent sports fan, and lover of national parks and libraries, Pat was looking forward to enjoying retirement before he was taken from us far too soon.
He is survived by his wife Beth Horowitz and siblings Mike Munson, Dorie Munson, Dennie Munson, Cathy Munson, Joe Munson, and Alex Munson. Pat also lost sister Maggie Munson far too soon. He is survived by 17 nieces and nephews and 12 great nieces and nephews.
Pat left us on October 16, 2024. There will be a memorial service planned for some time in 2025.
Donations in Pat’s memory will go to support the Blacksburg Public Library where he was an active member. Donations may be sent to the Montgomery-Floyd Regional Library Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization via the following link: https://www.mfrl.org/mfrlfoundation.php
