Draper Aden Associates (“DAA”), an engineering, surveying, and environmental services firm, announced that Michael D. Lawless, CPG, PG received the Martin Van Couvering Memorial Award from the American Institute of Professional Geologists (“AIPG”) on September 25, 2017. This national award recognizes exceptional service to the profession of geology and AIPG. It’s awarded annually to one AIPG member in the nation.
Lawless is a Principal and Executive Vice President with DAA. Based in Blacksburg, he serves as the firm’s Environmental Division Manager and oversees DAA’s environmental services, including geotechnical and geophysical engineering. He also manages the firm’s Blacksburg office and is a member of DAA’s leadership team.
“I’m honored and humbled to receive this award,” said Lawless. “It’s especially meaningful to be recognized by my peers in the industry. I’ve had a deep appreciation for the outdoors and geology since my time spending summers along the coast of Maine as a child. That passion has grown into my career and a lifelong commitment to geology. I believe in AIPG’s mission and am proud to support the principles of professional responsibility and public service.”
Lawless holds a Bachelor of Science degree in geology from Bates College and a Master of Science degree in Geology from Old Dominion University. He joined DAA over 20 years ago and has grown with the company by rising from the position of field geologist to his current role as Executive Vice President.
An active member with AIPG since he joined the Institute in 1994, Lawless served as the National President in 2010. He has held a variety of leadership positions, including Virginia Section President, National Secretary, and National Executive Committee member.
AIPG, which has over 7,800 members, is the largest association dedicated to promoting geology as a profession. The Institute bestows a limited number of national awards to recognize top geologists. The Martin Van Couvering Memorial Award honors service to AIPG and the geology profession. Factors under consideration for the award include contributions by individuals to the Sections, the committees, and special projects that enable the Institute to enhance the practice of geology.
