Mathis, Jr., Clifford Skipper
Clifford “Skip” Skipper Mathis Jr., aged 62, of Blacksburg, VA, passed away on July 25, 2024. Born in Norfolk, VA, on March 17, 1962, he was the son of the late Clifford S. Mathis Sr. and Shirley Jean (Volz) Mathis.
Skip graduated from Louisa County High School in 1980 and later attended Ferrum College and Emory University Seminary. From 1985-1993 He dedicated his life to serving others as a United Methodist Minister, a calling that fulfilled him deeply. Skip was a devout member of St. Jude’s Catholic Church in Radford, VA, where he was also actively involved in the Knights of Columbus.
Known for his Beautiful Singing Voice and his love of history and TV westerns, Skip had a unique ability to turn strangers into friends, a testament to his warm and engaging personality. He leaves behind a legacy of love and service, survived by his spouse of 34 years, Majken Gifford Mathis; brother, Dave Mathis and his wife, Beth; sister-in-law, Edris Sowder and her husband, Tod; and many beloved nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents and stepson, Jeff LaVere.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Jude’s Catholic Church in Radford, VA, on Thursday Aug 1st 2024 at noon. A casual Celebration of Life will be held Friday Aug 2 from 6-8pm at the Karr Activity Center at Warm Hearth Village in Blacksburg, VA, where family and friends are invited to share stories and memories.
McCoy Funeral Home in Blacksburg, VA, is assisting the family during this time. Skip’s life was a beacon of kindness and community, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
