Long, Richard Lee
Richard Lee Long, II, “Cowboy”, 43 of Check, passed away on Tuesday, October 21, 2025. He was born on September 8, 1982 to the late Richard Lee Long I and Rita Irwin Long. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his brother, Chris Petty; and sister, Leann Lackey.
Richard was always known as “Cowboy”. It didn’t matter where you were; you never heard his real name. He was always referred to as My Friend Cowboy. He was the most loving and devoted father and husband. He had the most infectious smile and personality that just lit up every room he entered. He was a friend to all and never met a stranger. He was extremely kind, generous, and always wanted to help or lend a hand when it was needed.
He was an incredibly gifted Tradesman with the ability to measure by eye and fix or build anything he came across. In his little spare time, Richard loved building and welding things with Colton in his shop. During sports seasons he could be found cheering loudly for Paris from the sidelines. His passion for Bull Riding burned deep and you could find him helping in the bucking chutes every chance he got. He loved helping young cowboys build skills by providing lessons or words of wisdom as he helped set them up for a ride.
He is survived by his wife, Miranda Long; son, Colton Lee Long; step-daughter, Paris Noelle Sutphin; sisters, Dede Ott and Shawn Straight; numerous nephews, nieces, and special friends he considered “brothers”.
A Celebration of Life will be held from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. with a gathering to follow on Saturday, November 8, 2025 at Kanawha Valley Arena in Dugspur, VA.
