Live at the Lyric
The Queen of Disco, Gloria Gaynor once said, “There’s nothing to compare to live music” and Henry Rollins even described it as “the cure for what ails ya”, but it was Polish Parliamentarian Jacek Bukowski who said it best, “There is only one better thing than music – live music”.
For over twenty years Live at the Lyric has been an ardent supporter of this sentiment. The Lyric Theatre has long been a pillar of the community and through Live at the Lyric, with its vast array of artists, styles, and genres, has extended that position, allowing music lovers from all over to come together in celebration.
As we seek to continue this role, none of it could be possible without the generous support of our underwriters, donors, and music attendees, all of whom should find some nuggets of joy in our latest season.
Live at the Lyric is gearing up with an amazing line up of performers for the 2022-2023 season. Kicking off the season on Saturday, Sept 24, is Elizabeth Cook, a veteran SiriusXM host of Apron Strings on the Outlaw Country channel and frequent guest star on the hit cartoon series Squidbillies.
Cook is a regular performer at the Grand Ole Opry and in the words of Drivin’ and Cryin’s legendary vocalist Kevin Kinney, “Elizabeth is so far ahead and under the radar you better have a supercharger for that fastback if you’re going to catch up! Enjoy the ride…”
Following Elizabeth Cook will be Shawn Mullins, Wednesday, November 16. After numerous postponements and rescheduling,
Live at the Lyric will welcome this legendary 90s singer-songwriter to our stage. In addition to numerous #1 songs of his own, such as “Shimmer”, “In My Head”, and “Beautiful Wreck”, Mullins also co-wrote the Zac Brown Band hit song, “Toes”.
Celebrating the anniversary of his critical breakthrough album Soul Core, Mullins will present the album with brand new arrangements of his classic songs, including his Grammy-nominated #1 hit, “Lullaby”.
The winter thaw comes early when dynamic, throwback blues trio GA-20 roll and tumble onto the Lyric stage Thursday, February 9, 2023. Disciples of the place where traditional blues, country and rock ‘n’ roll intersect, GA-20 are onto something big. American Songwriter says the band plays “rough and tumble, relentless blues” with “tough, insistent vocals” and “maximum intensity rocking” while UK tastemaker magazine MOJO describe GA-20 as making “a joyful noise.” In support of GA-20 will be the Isaac Hadden Organ Trio, a cutting-edge group redefining the modern organ trio, carving out a distinct voice in the world of funk, jazz, rock & R&B.
The season is set to close with New York City ska legends, The Slackers, on April 20, 2023. For over 30 years The Slackers have delivered their special blend of ska, reggae, and soul. Having been described as “the best ska band in the world”, “the sound of New York”, and “As close to perfect as it gets”, The Slackers are considered one of the best, most dynamic touring bands in the United States, with The Washington Post noting that the Slackers “remain at the top of their game”.
