Honky Tonk Thursdays at the Floyd Country Store
Put on your boots and get ready to scoot across the dance floor! The Floyd Country Store is introducing a new event and another opportunity for dancers and music lovers this fall. If you enjoy honky tonk, Western swing, and good old classic country, you’ll want to join us for Thursday Night Honky Tonk dances.
Starting September 2nd, every Thursday night from 6-8 pm we’ll be offering highly danceable country music from Redd Volkaert & Friends, with special appearances by guest performers. This is a donation-based event and all are welcome.
Honky Tonk Thursdays at The Floyd Country Store are hosted by Redd Volkaert, the legendary telecaster slinger from Merle Haggard’s band and will feature different musicians from around SW Virginia as well as around the country. When Redd isn’t here he will be hand picking a substitute band that will keep the crowd dancing and smiling.
Probably best known as the most Roy Nichols-like successor to the great Roy Nichols in Merle Haggard’s famous backup band, the Strangers, Canada native Volkaert had no difficultly establishing his place among the country’s top Telecaster guitar slingers.
However, to call Volkaert a mere Nichols-like Stranger would be selling short his seemingly effortless ability to conjure up at will a vast array of complex guitar styles and techniques in countless genres and subgenres of country, rock, jazz, swing, surf, etc. Volkaert (a 2008 Grammy winner for best country instrumental performance) has indeed mastered the many guitar styles he plays. Redd has recently moved to Galax, Virginia.
